A little late (as usual!) with this one!
Last Wednesday (June 11th) was a change from the usual fun at the Kildwick 10 and I headed over to ride the Blackburn and District CTC 11m Open Hilly Time Trial. I’d noticed on the CTC website that a friend of a friend was running it and with the word ‘hilly’ mentioned it seemed rude not too! The event was part of the ‘Lakes and Lancs Spoco League’ so attracted a good field of 45 riders.
I was pretty hilly as well! The course was actually the local road race circuit at Bashall Eaves (not far from Clitheroe) and is a tad under 11 miles. The profile is basically climb, descend, climb, descend, but with lots of fast, blind bends and the odd area of rough surface it’s quite a technical challenge, definitely a true spoco!
It’s certainly one of those courses that is good to know, as in places I found myself hankering on the brakes at a corner only to find I could easily have rolled through. The conditions were fantastic, what small wind there was dropped before the start and the evening was warm and really pleasant. With some of the recent soakings I’ve had it was just a real joy to soak in the glorious evening!
Given that I’d never been round the course before I was pretty pleased with my time of a mid ‘27’ and 6th place (I think). I probably went off up the initial climb a bit too hard, but I always seem to push a bit too hard on the hills anyway! I’ve yet to receive the full results, but I do know that Pete Williams (Haribo Beacon) won with an impressive mid ‘24’ time and a new course record.
There was also a couple of photographers out, so I much try and hunt those down. Many thanks to Ian and his team at Blackburn and District CTC it was a great event on an unusual course that I’ll definitely return to!
