It’s hard to believe we have being attending the Dave Rayner Fund Dinner for 20 years but it’s true. This year they celebrated the 20th anniversary of the fund which was set up in memory of cyclist Dave Rayner. The money they raise helps to support young cyclists have some racing experience abroad.
We are proud to say we have attended every dinner! This year it was held at the Royal Armouries in Leeds and much like last year we had a great time.
Over the years there have been some phenomenal guests including Eddy Merckx, Paulo Bettini and Miguel Indurain to name just a few! If you call into our shop many of our gallery pieces have been purchased at the Dave Rayner Dinner.
This year the fund came full circle and the headline guest was the first ever Dave Rayner funded rider – David Millar. We thought he spoke very well about the fund and his experiences of life as a racing cyclist. We are sure a lot of his success comes from those early years of riding on the continent. Millar has retired this year and so we are sure everyone involved with the fund is proud to have given a professional cyclist with some fantastic wins to his name his first opportunity.
Also in attendence was local girl and commonwealth champion Lizzie Armitstead as well as Ben Swift, Ian Stannard and the Yates brothers Simon and Adam. Adam was a Dave Rayner Funded rider himself last year. We are sure they will be very successful in the future after both having a great year as neo-pros.
The funded riders of 2014 were also introduced on stage and it was great to see Peter Barusevicus up there. He has been involved with VC Bradford since he first started cycling.
The CEO of Welcome to Yorkshire Gary Verity was the final speaker of the night. He shared an insight into the Tour de France when it came to Yorkshire earlier this year and also how he has come to love the sport of cycling. We are excited for the new Tour de Yorkshire coming next May!
After the interviews there was the raffle in which our Director Sandra won a prize and this was followed by the auction. As always there were some great pieces available and a couple of bidding wars!
The evening finished with dancing and catching up with friends old and new. As always it was a great night and we are already looking forward to next years event!
