2013 has been a great year for all of us at Pennine Cycles. With the launch and build up of the Tour de France coming to Yorkshire next year, the first Nige Moore Memorial Road Race and the inclusion at the Lord Mayors Show we have had plenty to smile about. It really has been a busy and exciting year. Here is a run down of just a few of our favourite experiences of 2013.
Time has flown since 12 months ago when we were stood outside Leeds Town Hall. It was snowing as we were waiting for the announcement of the first 2 stages of the 2014 Tour de France. These 2 stages are to be held in Yorkshire, the first from Leeds to Harrogate and then York to Sheffield. A lot of our year has been centred around Le Tour and over the next few months it will get even more exciting moving towards July 2014. Our dilemma is where to watch both stages from!
In July, Paul and Sandra went to watch the 2013 Tour de France Team Time Trial (TTT) in Nice, France. They had a fabulous view of the finish line and you can read all about their trip here. The TTT is one of our favourite events offering both drama and excitement. It was great to watch how the teammates work together. This year the TTT was won by the Orica Green-Edge Team. These were such an entertaining team throughout the Tour and we were happy to see them win! We put together some of our video footage from the stage.
The Nige Moore Memorial Road Race
Earlier in 2013 our great friend Nigel Moore died. In July we put on our first bike race for a number of years and named it the Nige Moore Memorial Road Race. The race itself (despite some early morning rain and wind) was a huge success. We had some fantastic sponsors and the riders enjoyed the day. The race was won by Joshua Ruddiman of Huddersfield Star Wheelers, who is pictured below. We put together a video from the day and you can view it here. Next years race is the 29th June 2014 and registration for 3rd and 4th category riders will be open in early January.
To celebrate Le Tour’s impending arrival in our county we made a Pennine bike this December for Welcome to Yorkshire’s CEO Gary Verity. The colours on the frame represent the winners jersey colours of yellow, polka dot, green and white. We are thrilled that Gary will be riding a bike made in Bradford, Yorkshire, Here is a report from Bike Biz all about the bike.
We have been making Pennine frames for over 60 years. This year we made a bike which Paul (our Managing Director) is riding, this is yellow to represent the winner of the Tour de France. We have also made a green bike for the sprinters jersey! Of course we have made other coloured frames too. You can find out more about our frames on our Pennine page.
The Lord Mayors Show
It was a great honour to be invited to ride in the Lord Mayors Show this November. We were asked by Welcome to Yorkshire to take part with our Pennine bikes. 4 members of our cycling club V.C.Bradford took part and you can read all about the amazing day they had on our blog. We were spotted on BBC1 too! We had a fabulous time and you can get a feel for the day with this video which Paul took whilst riding his bike. We also got to meet Bernard Hinault and Christian Prudhomme for the second time in 2013, you can read about our first time here.
The Dave Rayner Dinner
On the same day as the Lord Mayors Show (everything always happens at once) we also attended, with some of our cycling friends, the Dave Rayner Dinner. We love this evening, not only does it remember local cyclist Dave Rayner but also raises money for the fund which helps to support young cyclists who are racing abroad. This year we met ex-Dave Rayner funded rider and winner of a Tour de France stage in 2013 Dan Martin. Also there were Sky professional riders Ben Swift, Ian Stannard and Matt Edmondson as well as Triathlete Alistair Brownlee. They were all happy to pose for a picture and sign autographs, We love supporting this great night and over the years we have met lots of true cycling legends, you can read all about the 2013 dinner here. For more information and to book your ticket for next year you can visit the Dave Rayner Fund website.
A Great Year
Overall it has been a fantastic 2013 for everyone involved in Pennine Cycles with so many fun and exciting things happening in the world of cycling. We have ridden plenty of miles ourselves and with members of V.C.Bradford on our regular weekly rides. Many of our members took part in the 10 mile weekly Time Trials at Kildwick here is video from a sunny evening in June which you can view here.
We would love to hear in the comments below what your favourite cycling moment from 2013 was.
Thank you to all our friends and customers for continuing to shop at and support Pennine Cycles. We wish you a very Merry Christmas and lots of cycling success in 2014.
