After a fantastic day on Saturday watching stage 1 of the Tour de France at the finish in Harrogate it was time to watch the stage 2. As we did on the first stage we split up so we had different views on the day. Caroline and Keil went to watch the stage on the roads of Keighley whilst Sandra and Paul headed to the finish in Sheffield.
It was another early start for everyone to get to their positions. Caroline and Keil drove to Cullingworth where they parked their car and set off walking. This proved later to be a busy spot as people were parking here for Oxenhope, Haworth and Crossroads! Then they went to find their spot. They decided to walk down Halifax Road away from Crossroads as they thought this would get a lot busier later. Once they were in position they waited for the race to come through! It was so great to see all the cyclists riding on the closed roads before the Tour arrived. They chose Halifax Road as it is a place they have ridden themselves so it was good to see the top riders in the world following their wheels!
As time went on it got a lot busier in the area, there were lots of houses opposite and it was great to see so many people getting into the Tour de France spirit. An hour or so before the race was due the caravan came past. This is where many of the sponsors have cars and floats to promote their companies, some of them even throw out freebies!
Once they had all gone by it was time to wait for the race itself. There were a few team cars speeding by and lots of police who were waving and clearly having a great time. Having kept up to date with the race via Twitter there was a 7 man breakaway with about 3 minutes on the peloton.
The breakaway soon arrived to lots of cheers and applause! It seemed a very quick 3 minutes until the peloton arrived. They were not yet in full racing mode and took up the whole road. It was fantastic to see them on Halifax Road coming up out of Keighley!
Once all the following cars had left it was time to head home to catch the rest of the race on the TV and see if they could spot Sandra and Paul at the finish in Sheffield! They had kindly been invited by Mavic to go to the VIP hospitality section which was 50 meters from the finish line. Before it was time to go in they got an invite onto the Giant-Shimano team bus! This was very nice and great to have a sneak peek.
After they had their food and drink they waited with anticipation for the race to arrive. When it did they saw Vincenzo Nibali of Astana ride to victory and take the yellow jersey!
It was another fantastic day at the Tour de France but it wasn’t over for us as we went to London to see stage 3!
