The first weekend in May saw the first ever Tour de Yorkshire. A legacy race from last years Grand Depart for the Tour de France it was a 3 day stage race across our county of Yorkshire. We were able to watch stages 2 and 3 and we all had a great time!
We filmed a vlog of our weekend which you can watch here.
For stage 2 on the Saturday we all went our separate ways. Paul and Sandra went to watch the start in Selby as VIP’s, while Caroline and Keil went to see the finish in York. The start of the men’s race in Selby was fun, Paul and Sandra were able to see many of the riders signing on and being interviewed. Sandra even got her photo taken with a few of the riders including the days winner Moreno Holfand and the overall race winner Lars Petter Nordhaug!
Over in York Caroline and Keil watched the women’s race which was a 4 lap circuit and won by Louise Mahe. As the course was flat is was fast and nobody was ever able to break away. It was great to see women’s racing included in the weekend.
Then the men’s race arrived and they did 2 laps of the same circuit before there was a sprint finish won by Moreno Hofland. We gave him a cheer as his Lotto Jumbo team ride Bianchi bikes which we are now stockists of.
The following day, stage 3 was also Sandra’s birthday. This day we all stayed together and watched the race at Brow Top corner. There was a good crowd and great atmosphere here. It was a good spot as it’s a sharp bend which leads to a steep downhill before the riders headed up to the iconic Haworth cobbles. The riders had to slow down so we were able to see them all! At the time there was a small breakaway and the stage was ultimately won by Ben Hermans.
All in all it was a wonderful weekend and we believe a huge success! We loved seeing all the riders yet again riding roads we know well and we are already looking forward to next year!
